Surgery Went Well

The surgeons are very happy with the surgery. They were able to remove a thin layer of scar tissue from the inside of her left ventricle. It was not thick enough to make them believe that it will help her pulmonary pressure come down, but nonetheless it was a success and now we just need to wait and see how her heart responds. The Berlin Heart is working "beautifully" and Bailey tolerated the whole procedure "very well". The surgeons reiterated that Bailey is "one of a kind". That's for sure! They left her sternum open (stretched her skin over the opening) to alleviate any restriction the ribs would put on her heart, and they will keep her sedated and on the ventilator until they close that, which should be in the next day or 2 - a much easier surgery than today. Then they will begin waking her up.

All I want to do is give her a great big hug, and I can't do that with everything attached. I thought I would be a pro at this, but I lost it when we went back to ICU to see her. She is also in isolation because of her open sternum - they are being very careful of germs and we have to put on gloves and a mask to enter her room. The Berlin Heart is just a little rectangular box sitting on her stomach with some tubes leading into her chest. It's amazing to simply think about that little box assisting her heart. It's very overwhelming right now.

Only time will tell if her heart will thrive from the removal of the scar tissue or if this is a bridge to a transplant. The doctors have done their work - now we're going to sit back and watch God do His.

Thank you again for all your thoughts and prayers -- they have been truly a comfort to all of us and Bailey will really enjoy hearing from you all in the comments. I'm very tired and need to go now. I feel like I've rambled here, but I wanted to update all of you. Today was tough, tomorrow will be better, and the next day even better.

Talk to you all soon!
Angie

I'm so thankful to know she made it through the surgery. It is 9:15 and it's the first time your note has shown up. Praise God from whom all blessings flow! I wish I could have been there with you and held your hand when you were crying. Bailey gets her "one of a kind"-ness from her Mama. My heart belongs to Bailey. God will do His best as he always does. In my prayers always...Mary Ann

We went to prayer meeting tonight at church and everyone was asking about Bailey before we even got into the meeting, as were the praise team members when I went to practice, and while at church I had a phone call from a friend in Arizona that has their entire church praying for you and wanted updates, and we have had many calls at home, too. Just a reminder to all of you that so many people love and care for you yet have never even met you! God, the Great Physician, is watching over you and may He touch you all with His presence. Love you very much and look forward to seeing you soon!

Thanks for the upate Angie. You truly are a steel magnolia. We prayed for Bailey, the doctors, nurses, you and the rest of the family this morning. The girls then insisted that we pray for Bailey before we went to piano lessons tonight. Bailey, you and the rest of the family are so loved. All of the posts today are only a tiny glimpse of how special you all are to so many people. And, that doesn't even begin to capture how great God's love for you is. I know it has to take extra effort to go down to post updates, but I want you to know that we are so grateful for them. I didn't know if I could go to sleep tonight without knowing how the surgery went. I guess it is times like these that reveal how tight the strings of the heart bind friends together. Whenever and in whatever capacity you need us, we will be there.
Love, Mike, Nancy, Angela & Andrea

Angie,
Glad to hear that all is well. That is great news that the surgeons are happy with the results. Modern medicine is quite amazing. I made a silk flower arrangment for Bialey. When ever Bailey gets to have flowers, I'll bring it or send it with Vickie. We are praying for you, Bailey and your family. Sue
