Happy 4th of July!!

Hope everyone got to enjoy some fireworks - we did! We got the royal treatment. Some family members and some of Bailey's nurses gathered in Bailey's room tonight and the transport team came about 8:30 and escorted us up to the helipad where security was waiting for us. Oh, my gosh! It was so exciting! First of all, just to see the helipad was exciting. It's really fascinating to get a close-up look - and you could have thrown a rock at our window which was right across from it. All around the city you could see fireworks of all shapes and sizes and colors shooting into the sky. It was absolutely beautiful; an incredible view of downtown; and such a feeling of celebration in the air everywhere you looked. The girls were so excited to be up there - even higher than the parking garage where we were originally planning on watching the fireworks. It was kind of spooky being so high. There was an outlet right by the door, so we all gathered around Bailey's Berlin Heart out on the walkway, spread out our blankets and chairs, turned on the radio, and waited for the big ones. The walkway, of course, had handrails all around and it led to a catwalk that went out to the helipad - but there weren't railings around the helipad. That was the spooky part. It looked like you could (and I guess you could) just walk right off the edge of it. But we stayed far away from that and clung tight to the handrails. It was a beautiful night out too. No bugs, no rain, no heat, no humidity - it was just gorgeous. It definitely was the most exciting time we've had watching fireworks. Thank you, Dr. Cox, for arranging the evening for us. We had a GREAT time! And thank you to everyone who came for sharing the moment with us. You are all so special.

We tried to go outside in the courtyard today to play games in the shade, but it was just too hot. Bailey had her long pants rolled up to her thighs, and she just couldn't stand it any longer. So we moved into the air conditioning in the cafeteria and played games for a little while there.

So, not only does Bailey have red streaks in her hair, but after Marissa and Josie joined us late last night, they decided they wanted purple streaks in their hair. Believe me, I took pictures! Dr. T. saw the girls' hair today and said to Bailey, "I thought we talked about this." He just laughed and shook his head. Bailey was proud.

Bailey and Josie are in the room choreographing a new dance together. (Mary Ann, it reminds me so much of high school when we would get together and come up with some rifle routines! Oh, those were the days. So much fun!) It's so good to see the girls getting along so well. Remember back a few months when Bailey had a hard time when the girls would come around? Well, it seems those days are long gone. They've enjoyed each other's company so much that they all ask pretty much every night if they can spend the night with us. They have such a good time.

Tomorrow's the echo - probably late afternoon. I'll keep you posted!

Hugs,
Angie

Wow that sounds fun. Andrew and I were at our hospital too on the 4th but we couldn't see the fireworks from where we were. :-(. We are in Chicago and watched them on tv though. My husband took Andrew's two brothers and tried to take them to the lake to see them and they were on the wrong side of the buildings. Oh well!

The funny thing is we could see the hellipad from Andrew's room. never even thought about going up there. He was still in ICU though and was in no shape to leave that night. He did get out of there by Tuesday.
